Varsity Head Coach
Coach Tim Saunders is in his 24th season as the head coach at Dublin Coffman High School. During his tenure Coffman has produced a record of 393- 231 including five District Championships, two Regional Championships and one State Championship.
Coach Saunders began his career as an assistant coach at Portsmouth High School in the Cincinnati area. A year later he was an assistant coach at Indiana University. From there he went on to become head coach at Meigs High School for four years, and has been the head coach at Coffman ever since.
In addition to leading the team, Coach Saunders has been instrumental in building the baseball program and the baseball facilities at Coffman High School. Today, the field at Coffman is recognized as among the finest high school baseball facilities in the nation. Through his efforts the field was chosen by the National High School Baseball Coaches Association as the 1997 District 4 Field of the Year and the ABCA and Turface Inc. National Region 5 Field of the Year. In 2001 it was voted the BCA National Field of the Year. Coach Saunders has achieved a variety of honors, including Coach of the Year in 2000 as well as the ABCA District 4 Coach of the Year and Columbus Dispatch and Ohio Coaches Association Coach of the Year. This honor was followed by a Division 1 State Championship in 2001.
In addition to the Rocks, he has coached the 1995 Olympic Sports Festival North Team, the 1997 USA Junior National Trials Red Team, and the 1998 and 1999 USA Youth National Teams. In 2001 Saunders received the United States Olympic Committee’s Developmental Coach of the Year for guiding the 2001 Youth National Team to the Pan American Championships. In the summer of 2009 Coach Saunders was the AFLAC East Team Head Coach in San Diego, California.
Saunders attended the University of Rio Grande from 1978-1981 and played outfield for the Redmen for two years. His senior year, while student teaching at Portsmouth High School he was an assistant coach for the State Runner-up Portsmouth baseball team. A leader among coaches in Ohio, he is a Past President of the Ohio High School Baseball Coaches Association and the Central District Baseball Coaches Association. He is currently the Secretary and Vice President for the Central District Baseball Coaches Association and is a recommending scout for the Cincinnati Reds. Coach Saunders and his wife Janie, also a teacher at Coffman, have two children. His daughter, Shelby, is 21 years old and his son, C.J., is a freshman at The Ohio State University.
Coach Sutherland has been a Varsity Assistant with the Coffman Baseball program for 14 years where he has worked mostly with the pitchers and catchers. Coach Sutherland played for coach Saunders as a high school player at Coffman from 1992-1996 and then went on to play in college at the University of Rio Grande. Coach Sutherland got his start in coaching as the head American Legion Coach in Coffman’s summer program in 1999 and has been involved in Coffman’s summer program for over 18 years. He is the recipient of the National High School Baseball Coaches Associations National Assistant Coach of the Year award in 2012. He is currently an Intervention Specialist at Coffman High School working with students with disabilities. He has been married to Coffman guidance counselor Nicole Sutherland for 8 years.
Junior Varsity Coach
2016 is coach Botti’s third year with the Coffman Baseball program as a coach, which began as the Freshman assistant coach. Coach Botti played for coach Saunders as a high school player at Coffman from 2004-2007 as a utility infielder. Coach Botti got his start in coaching baseball in 2012 as the head coach for the 7th grade Grizzell Middle School baseball team. He is currently an Instructional Paraprofessional at Coffman High School working with students with disabilities.
Junior Varsity Coach
Coach Zender is in his second year as Freshman Assistant with the Coffman Baseball program, where he works mostly with the infielders. Coach Zender played at Ottawa-Glandorf High School from 2005-2008 and then went on to play in college at The Ohio State University-Lima. Coach Zender got his start in coaching as the head coach of the Ottawa-Glandorf High School ACME summer team. During his 3 years as head coach his team made an appearance to the 2014 ACME State Tournament. He is currently a Math Teacher at Coffman High School.
